Report on "Failures in English: Different causes"

A huge number of students fail in English every year in public examination despite studying it as a compulsory subject from class I to Honours level. Now prepare a report focusing on different causes of their failures in English for a daily newspaper.

                 Failures in English: Different Causes

Rajon, Dhaka : Speakers at a discussion yesterday expressed concern that a large number of students fail in English every year in public examinations despite studying it as a compulsory subject from 1 to Honours level. They are being deprived of jobs of all categories. Admitting the fact, the eminent educationalists of the country pointed out some of the most likely causes of it. The traditional methodology of teaching aids our learners little in the course of learning English. English, being a foreign language always seize our students with English phobia and they think it difficult to learn without trying to the limit of their capabilities. The specialists also said that hard and fast rules of grammar doesn't case them in learning English. Besides our institution and teachers are not equipped enough to meet the needs of our learners. They also felt that the curriculum introduced by the NCTB is mostly unsuitable for our Bengali speaking students. There are barely any opportunities for training of our staffs and developing of our institution.
And finally the speakers stressed on one thing that most of the students do not find interest in learning English and they avoid learning it. So they fail in the examinations. Some of the students try to learn English without understanding and it come almost no use of them in the examinations and as a result they fail.

Prices of Essential Commodities on Rise

Sylhet, 25 April: In recent time the prices of the essential commodities are on high rise. It is rising so rapidly and suddenly that the general people have nothing to do but be at a loss going to market. Particularly the poor and the people of fixed income are the worst victim of this situation. Some of them opined that some dishonest businessmen are taking the benefit of the situation.. They have also expressed that these sort of businessmen are mainly responsible for this condition. Because they are creating instability in market price. Though there also are some logical reasons for this price rise, these can be removed by taking necessary initiatives. But in the true sense of term, the prices are getting higher and higher day by day.So now the prices of essential commodities have gone beyond the capacity of the general people. The government should take necessary steps as soon as possible to solve the problem so that the prices may come under the capacity of the general people. It is good  news that the authority concerned should have informed us that they have decided to control this situation at any rate.

         Deforestation and its Devastating Consequences

Dhaka, May 15 : Plants and trees are supposed to be blessings. They give us oxygen without which we cannot survive for a single moment. They give us shade and shelter, food and fruits, medicine. They keep ecological balance. In fact, plants and trees are of great use to us. But it is a matter of great concern that plants and trees are being cut down indiscriminately. Forests are being burnt down. Deforestation is seen almost everywhere.
Deforestation is basically caused for human habitation and collection of wood. But environment friendly birds and beasts are facing extinction.
because of deforestation, carbon-dioxide is increasing. Global warming is so severe that life has become suffocating. Natural disasters like earthquake, tsunami are taking place. Consequently heavy loss is being caused to human life and property
It is seen that ice caps in the Arctic region have already been flooded.
Bangladesh is a low lying country . It's southern parts may go under if deforestation is allowed to go on. So more plants and trees should be planted. Necessarily tree plantation program should be introduced. If anyone cuts a tree, he/ should plant two trees. Besides, those who cut down trees illegally should be severely punished. No one should be allowed to violate forest preservation act. Let's make the world green by planting trees.

A Journey by Boat Photo

Introduction:- A journey by boat is very pleasant as well as interesting. At the same time it is something like a thrilling adventure to man living in a city. Pent up in a noisy and crowded city like Dhaka, I naturally jumped at the suggestion of some of my friends contemplation for a journey by boat.

Time and preparation:- It was the month of October, 2010. We made our journey from Dhaka Sadarghat to Munshigonj. We were six in number. We hired a large boat and made all possible preparation for this journey. The day was nice. The river was calm and quiet.

Description of the journey:- We started our journey at 12 noon. The boatman began to row the boat and the boat was moving swiftly. Gentle breeze was blowing. The small waves were beating against it. The ripples of the river made a sweet murmuring sound. While passing through, we enjoyed the beautiful sights on both the sides of the river. At about 3 p.m. our boat touches the ghat of a village market. We got down from the boat and bought a large ‘Hilsha fish’. The boatman cooked it and we had a nice meal. After resting for a while we started our journey again. Then the evening came with all its beauties and glories. The last rays of the setting sun reflected on the calm water that enhanced the beauty or the river more affluently. We got on the roof of the boat and enjoyed the grand sight of the nature. The crimson rays of the setting sun added to the beauty of the green fields charmed us. After seven hours journey we reached Munshigonj ghat at about 6 p.m. Some of our friends were waiting for us at the ghat. They accorded us a hearty reception.

The return journey:- We spent a happy time with them. After a lapse of about two hours we again got into the boat and started our journey. Our return journey was equally pleasant. The boat was passing very gently. It was a moon-lit night. All my friends came out of the boat and sat on the roof. The moon’s beam flooded the whole river and filled it with uncommon beauty. Out of joy one of my friends began singing a sweet song. I thought I was in a dream land where only joy and beauty reign. The boatman also began to sing:-

“Row, row, row, the boat, gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream”.

When the night advanced, we entered into the cabin and lie down and fell asleep. The next morning when we woke up it was just daylight. Our boat reached the Sadarghat. We got down from the boat. Thus, our journey by boat to a happy end.

Conclusion:- The journey by boat is really a pleasant one. It provides us a lot thrill and pleasure that cannot be described but to be felt only. Such a pleasure of a journey which we undertook will never efface from memory. Really this journey by boat will supply us serene delight for all time to come.

Essay on How to Improve Your English

Good English skills are vital to succeeding in life, in terms of education, career, and personal relationships. This means that many people want to improve their English, but it can be hard to know how to go about it. There are three main areas that have to be worked on: pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Getting the pronunciation right is something that many international students worry about, but that people born in English-speaking countries often forget about, but it is equally important for all. After all, pronouncing the words you use correctly makes you look far more intelligent. The first step to improving pronunciation is often to slow down your speech a little and think a bit more carefully. Pay attention to consonants, particularly at the end of words (as these are often missed off in speech), and make sure sounds like “sh” and “th” come out properly. A good way to improve pronunciation is often to watch English movies in which people are speaking properly.
The second way to improve your English is to widen your vocabulary. One good way to do this is to learn a new word (or a few) every day, and make an effort to use them. Reading is also important in learning new words, as is looking up words you don’t know in a dictionary so that you will be able to use them yourself. Making sure that you fully understand the meaning is really important, though, because it is no good using new words if you don’t use them in the correct place.
Because of this, just knowing a dictionary definition may not be enough; you will need to know in what contexts the new word can be used or you could say something that makes no sense. The same applies to colloquial phrases, which many people use incorrectly after hearing them one time (perhaps used by a friend in the wrong context). Understanding the register is very important too, as you don’t want to use slang in a formal context, or alienate people in social situations with overly complex words that only serve to make you look arrogant.
The final thing to really work on is grammar, and spelling and punctuation with it. Reading will help a great deal in this respect, as you can learn from seeing it used properly. There are also plenty of websites and books available to help with grammar and punctuation if you’re unsure of how to use something. Improving your grammar is so important because spellcheckers still aren’t advanced enough to pick up most errors, or even incorrectly tell us to change something. Pronunciation and vocabulary must be improved though too, as all are equally important and all affect your grasp of the English language.
